Introduction of the Class 185 fleet    Client: TransPennine Express

Engaged in the undertaking of stopping and stepping risk assessment at all platforms/stations where the class 185 will be required to stop, to ensure that potential risks are addressed to ensure that risks are identified, controlled and managed. Over 100 site visits and assessments took place.

Franchise mobilisation and transition

Assisted Franchisee to implement their mobilisation strategy during the run up to franchise commencement and assisted with franchise transition. Advised Executive Directors on the development of the safety strategy. Developed SPAD & serious operating incident reduction strategy.

Review of Severn Tunnel Emergency           Client: Network Rail
Train Competence Management System

Undertook a comprehensive risk based review of the Severn Tunnel Emergency train competence management system. The purpose of the review was to identify compliance with Railway Group Standards, HSE guidance and the Railway (Safety Critical Work) regulations, and whether the requirements were measured against a risk based training needs and task analysis.

On Train Monitoring Recorders research project        Client: RSSB

Engaged as the operational expert on the OTMR project (T572), which primarily was to identify suitable research solution suppliers, liaise with the Train Operators and run an industry workshop to identify operational user needs

Franchise Bid - Safety strategy  Client: First Group – Rail Division

Engaged in the development of the safety strategy for the Integrated Kent Franchise bid, which included producing the strategy on how the company would manage the introduction of new rolling stock, and safely operate on both CTRL2 and existing Network Rail routes.

Route learning strategy         Client: Harsco Track Technologies

This project was to identify and give the client guidance on how to make significant savings in its operation in respect to route knowledge and the hiring in of route conductors. Even taking into account initial outlay, the saving made initially and thereafter was more than sufficient to justify adoption.

Year 2005/2006 Achievements:

Driver only brake testing Client: EWS

Rail Operations Development were appointed as independent safety advisor to EWS on this project, so as to ensure that during the initial trials and the production of the associated risk assessment and controls, all areas of risk were properly addressed prior to EWS introducing these new working arrangements.

Class 56 locomotive training Client: Fastline Freight

To assist Fastline Freight in becoming the UK’s latest Freight Operator, RODL developed and designed their class 56 conversion course, and undertook the refresher training of their drivers on the operational functionality of the class 56 locomotive.

Introduction of a route learning strategy Client: Grant Rail

RODL were engaged by Grant Rail to assist them in developing their route learning strategy, which covered policies and procedures, route risk assessments, route media and route maps, following the awarding of their new Network Rail infrastructure contracts in the North East and North West.
