Accountable for the developing and managing all the Traincrew management procedures that formed the basis of Transrail's Railway Safety Case.

DRIVING MANAGER: NETWORK SOUTHEAST June 93 – April 94
Responsible for co-ordinating and managing strategically all of Network Southeast’s train driving safety performance requirements. As part of this role during the move towards privatisation, had the duty of disposing of Network Southeast’s HQ Traincrew management safety responsibilities to the then nine Divisions, to ensure seamless transition into pre-privatisation train operations.


TRAINCREW OFFICER: TRAINLOAD FREIGHT Jan 92 – June 93
Accountable for developing and introducing the Traincrew management procedures to TLF’s twelve Regions, fifty Traincrew depots, that affected 150 managers/assessors and 5,000 Traincrew.


TRAINCREW STANDARDS MANAGER: GREAT EASTERN Jan 91 – Jan 92
Accountable for the standards, audit regime and competence of all personnel within the Traincrew function.


CHIEF TRACTION INSPECTOR: ANGLIA REGION July 89 – Jan 91
Responsible for the competence and operational standards of Anglia Region’s 28 Traction Inspectors and 1200 Traincrew.

Alan John Macdonald (IRO), Director

Career History
During 29 years working in the rail industry has on many occasions had total responsibility for the safety management development and compliance requirements for the train driving aspects of a TOC’s railway Operational (Railway) Safety Case, which included the safety critical competence management system for safety critical assessors, train drivers, managers and shunters. Was also responsible for the vocational skills training and ongoing competence of all Operations managers, assessors, trainers and incident/accident investigators.


In addition was responsible for developing, negotiating and introducing all changes to driver management, training and assessment with the relevant Railway Trade Unions. Also responsible for the safe introduction of many new working practices and productivity issues affecting the train driving workforce.


Besides attending regular meetings with all six Network Rail zones (i.e. SPADRAM, Train Operator Interface etc). Also sat on the following Industry groups: RSSB (Research, Railway Group Standards and National SPAD Focus Group), HSE (RIAC Safety Critical Work Group), and Vehicle Communications SIC Group. Was also the founding and former chairman of the Rail Industry’s Driver Management Liaison group.
